INITIAL THOUGHTS BASED ON BASIC RESEARCH

Eskom is having a bit of trouble at the moment with regard the supply and demand of electricity in South Africa, this has embodied itself in what is called Load shedding. In order for eskom to maintain its recommended back up reserve of electricity, the electricity supply is cut to certain areas during certain times of the day. It is sparadic and can be 'predicted' using a loadshedding schedule found at http://www.eskom.co.za/live/loadshed.php. This schedule comes into play in certain areas when the loadshedding danger alert is on a certain colour>> CODE BROWN being the worst( when its brown thers shit) and it gets steadily less tense during CODES red, orange and green. In my area , south of johannesburg we tend to get our power cut of for two or three hours in the evening ( 6-9 oclock) when its code brown ( shit creek, no paddle). For me like for most South Africans I would assume it is a total inconveinice, in particular when I am halfway through watching Terms of Endearment or any other chick flick for that matter.

Although I am mildly irritated, i soon get over it, and find people who complain about it endlessly quickly get on my last nerve. I would imagine it will have some heavy effects on businesses and the economy. All of which I could care less about until it gets to the point of directrly affecting my life or those i care for around me. The only ones I am really sympathetic to are the small startup business owners who have put their hearts and soula into their respective enterprises. I can just imagine their distress as I speak, and a single tear runs down my cheek for them accompanied by a small violin peice.

As a young white liberal I am quick to shift the blame from the ANC to the Apartheid regime. But like most things in South Africa race is often a key factor, i saw this particularly ignorant blog at http://www.thenack.iblog.co.za/2007/10/11/escom-is-useless-morons/ . LOL , the poor guy couldn't spell Eskom nor could he form a proper sentence in English. I wish would just write in Afrikaans. Anyway, the oke tuned that this is all the ANCs' fault and that they didnt act upon recieving the predictions presented to them by Eskom more than a decade ago. This is true and the ANC needs to be accept the balme therefore. But then the bloggers go off on another tangent every joe blogger went to point out more and more flaws about the current ruling party

How much longer do we have to contend with the useless information given to us by Eishkom. Schedules for the power cuts that don’t get followed thereby creating losses in industry trying to curb their own losses by making provision for power cuts that don’t occur. Just shows what idiots are in control of the country now. Can’t blame this one on apartheid???"<<

I think i can blame this one partly on Apartheid myself Dennis. Under oppression from the Apartheid governmet a large majority of the people in SA suffered under the Group Areas act and the like. The Areas the non white people of this country were inadequit and had poor if any plumbing or electricity. When the ANC came to power this was rectified and this oppressed segment of the population were rightly promised electricity, housing and plumbing etc. This they were granted, and it is because of the rectifing of this wrong committed by apartheid that we now have such a large demand and such a small supply.>> Load Shedding.
