Watsup doglets?
I have always been interested in those eskom adds where they portray people who steal electricity as IZINYOKA ( from what i recall this means snake or devil like evil person snake thing) it was funny how in the adds their eyes were slanted and glowed like i presume the devil's would. They convinced us that the reason for the adds was the saftey of children. If you remember the Izinyoka were so evil because children died when they touched the cables dangerously left open by the IZONYOKA because of his/her greed. I think the goal or contact in the ads was to bust these people by giving anonymous tips. Not that I am unsympathetic to those who die in such a tragic way I think the adverts were a croc. ESkoms primary gaol wasn't to save lives in my opinion, but to save money being 'stolen' by these izinyoka. They were palying the viewer and very few people noticed what i have from the adds.
I had one idea for a concept which was a humourous stab at eskom. I wanted to make a 'how to guide' to be an IZINYOKA. It would take the form of a tutorial, similar to those you find about how to work a specific computer program. Various reasons for me neglecting the choice:
- It was proving extremely difficult to find out how these Izinyoka do what the do, let alone explain it to the electricly challenged.
-People might actually do what I wanted them to and this might get me into trouble
-I dont think it would really be solving anything, nor would it make a positive difference
- The only possible target audience would be those who hate eskom enough to sabotage them and those out to make a quick illegal buck.
I found quite an interesting article about these Izinyoka at http://www.news24.com/News24/South_Africa/News/0,,2-7-1442_1841805,00.html
where they proceeded to highlight the dangers of this theft and not the losses to ESKOM as the driving factor for the campaign.
also a quote from one quite unlikely "IZINYOKA"
"One woman in Philippi, Cape Town, who did not want to be named, admitted that she manages to run her whole household and pay for her children's school fees just by selling illegal electricity."
..........weird, that its a woman supporting her family and not an evil man up to no good. Equality at last.
